This made the Prince, once happy, very sad. His eyes got watered and large drops of tears began to run down his golden cheeks. A little swallow, who had alighted between the feet of the Happy Prince to spend the night there, became curious to know where did the drops of water fall from.

He looked up and saw the eyes of the Happy Prince full of tears. The bird took pity on the Prince and became ready to assist him in his desire to ease the sufferings of the common people.

He became the messenger of the Prince and agreed to remove the fine gold and jewels from his statue to distribute them among the poor and the needy.

Then he plucked a sapphire from one of the eyes of the statue and gave it to the playwright who was too poor to make fire in the winter to continue his writing.

He was also very hungry and feeling weak. One day, the Prince saw a match girl who was being beaten by her father for letting her matches fall in the gutter.

He immediately commanded the swallow to pluck out his other eye and help the girl. But the swallow was not ready to do so because this would make the Prince completely blind.

The little bird decided not to leave the company of the Happy Prince who had gone blind now. Although the Prince was not able to see the sorrows or sufferings any more, he knew it was there.

So he instructed the bird to take off the fine gold he was covered with and give it to the poor. The bird followed his words and picked off leaf after leaf of the gold, till the Happy Prince looked quite dull and grey.

Was he once the most famous man in London? The artist crucified by a society that once worshipped him? Under the microscope of death he reviews the failed attempt to reconcile with his long suffering wife Constance, the ensuing reprisal of his fatal love affair with Lord Alfred Douglas and the warmth and devotion of Robbie Ross, who tried and failed to save him from himself.

Travelling through Wilde's final act and journeys through England, France and Italy, the transience of lust is laid bare and the true riches of love are revealed.

It is a portrait of the dark side of a genius who lived and died for love. Written by Beta Film GmbH.

All credit to Rupert Everett for bringing to life his story of Wilde's final years following his exile from England after his release from prison.

The film is never less than interesting and often fascinates but it suffers because Everett cannot fully live up to his decision to play the lead, write the script and helm the picture.

He's best when acting but even this falters in some scenes with Bosie that are distinctly undercooked. The script in parts needed a tighter edit and there's only so much reflected light in the camera that you can put down to cinematic meaning making and artistic licence.

Sorry Rupert - just too little butter over too much bread I'm afraid. However, the film is never less than distracting and Everett successfully makes Wilde the man that he was: At once irritating, outrageous but always to be loved.

His performance of Wilde incited many emotions in me but I always returned to compassion. Worth a look!

Many years later, after happily playing with the children all the time, the Giant is old and feeble.

One winter morning, he awakes to see the trees in one part of his garden in full blossom. He descends from the castle to discover the boy that he once helped standing beneath a beautiful white tree.

He does not realise that the boy is actually the Christ Child and is furious that somebody has wounded him.

And the child smiled on the Giant, and said to him, "You let me play once in your garden, to-day you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise.

Shortly afterwards, the happy giant dies. That same afternoon, his body is found lying under the tree, covered in blossoms.

This story is more or less a story within a story. It begins with a water-rat commenting to a duck about her ducklings, who are refusing to obey her.

When he mentions friendship, a linnet flies down from a tree, and begins the story, intended to explain to the water-rat what true friendship is.

Hans was a little man who owned a beautiful garden, where he grew flowers of all kinds and colours which were sold in the market to make some money.

Hans was so devoted to Hugh that he even gifted him whole bunches of flowers from his own garden. However, when winter came, Hans found himself in a very difficult situation, as his flowers wouldn't flourish anymore until the following spring, meaning that he was impoverished, living on a simple diet of a few pears or hard nuts.

Meanwhile, the miller lived comfortably in his own house, and avoided visiting his friend or helping him in any way not to make him jealous and spoil, if not break, their friendship.

Finally, Spring came and it was time for Hans to sell some of his primroses, in order to buy back his silver buttons.

Hans naively accepts the deal, but the unceasing requests of the miller keeps him busy to the point that he cannot tend to his garden.

One day, Hans was asked to go and seek a doctor for Hugh's son who had hurt himself, but as it was a stormy and rainy night and he could barely see where he was going.

Hugh, exaggerating his sadness, [39] attends Hans's funeral, and the linnet's story is concluded with the following sentence: "'A great loss to me at any rate,' answered the Miller; 'why, I had as good as given him my wheelbarrow, and now I really don't know what to do with it.

It is very much in my way at home, and it is in such bad repair that I could not get anything for it if I sold it. I will certainly take care not to give away anything again.

One always suffers for being generous. The water-rat, however, is unmoved by the story, saying that he would rather have not had listened to it, and disappears into his home.

His performance of Wilde incited many emotions in me but I always returned to compassion. Worth a look! Looking for something to watch?

Oscar Wilde has just been released from prison after serving his sentence for homosexuality caused by his affair with Alfred Douglas.

Removed from his wife and children, he arrives in Dieppe, where old friends Reggie Turner and Robert Ross await him.

Wilde assumes the fictional identity of Sebastian Melmoth and tries to rebuild his life: he writes to his wife Constance Lloyd to try to make peace with her, but in vain; moreover, his true identity is soon discovered and he becomes the victim of acts of homophobia, to which he responds with violence, then receiving severe warnings.

The writer then writes to Bosie Douglas, his old lover that he has never forgotten, causing anger in his friend Robbie, secretly in love with him forever and never reciprocated.

The two meet again and instinctively flee together to Naples, where they will live for some time in a house in Posillipo.

Here the two are free to love each other and lead their libertine life, but soon Lady Douglas, Bosie's mother, ceases to send her son the necessary subsidies to cover their expenses.

Despite Oscar's anger, the two give in and separate. Shortly after Constance dies from complications due to a surgical operation, and Oscar is denied parental authority over the two children she had with him.
