This leads to a great understanding by Neo that he was either lied to or no one knew. This 6th iteration is unknown to the humans, except for The One and the Architect.

We begin to learn about the previous iterations of the Matrix, with the 1st iteration being a Utopia, which failed miserably as an imperfect subject could not live in a perfect world without rejecting it.

Minds awoke and the batteries they were once enslaved for began collapsing. This led to the 2nd iteration, where the Architect made the world imperfect along with spawning a program to learn from humans who we'd discover to be The Oracle.

This iteration also failed because of a lack of choice which the Oracle discovered. The AI responsible could not fathom a simulation where choices, perhaps invalid, could be allowed.

The 3rd iteration was born between the Oracle and Architect giving humans test subjects the perception of choice at a near conscious level.

As an unlocked mind inside the Matrix would only increase the potential for catastrophic failure. This destroys an inkling of hope as we learn Zion is nothing more than another machine oriented control structure.

The machines built it, know exactly where it is and only chose to delay the inevitable for the perception of choice. Meanwhile, back with the Architect, Neo is given two doors each carrying a choice.

Door 1 - Neo selects 23 people to free from Matrix to rebuild Zion after its destroyed and the Matrix is reborn into version 7.

Door 2 - Neo returns to the Matrix, which is collapsing and dying. This will result in the loss of lives of millions in both Zion and the Matrix and extinction of the human species.

As the Architect explains, the previous iterations of Neo have always "reloaded" the Matrix as the survival of the species is more important than the life of his friends.

The 6th iteration of Neo does something different though and goes through the door ending the species in order to save Trinity over love.

So many dots are connected here, as we learn the prophecy isn't true and this existence Neo has is one big lie in order to keep minds enslaved chasing something.

His entire life has done this pattern before, being awoken and freed, trained and given the choice to reload the Matrix.

As Neo saves Trinity and leaves the crumbling Matrix, he kills five Sentinels in the real world! With the destruction of machines in the real world we are left wondering a lot of things.

Is the real world another Matrix? How can Neo affect objects in the real world? This explanation jumps all the way back to the end of the first movie when Neo enters Agent Smith's body.

His Matrix brain code is ran directly on a machine program and a part of it stays behind. After his discussion with the Architect he becomes aware of this connection to the machines and can use this connection, much like a WiFi network works, to disrupt them in the real world.

The 2nd movie ends with Neo passing out right next to Bane, who we remember is now the real world version of Agent Smith. With the machines moments from the surface of Zion, the entire world of the Matrix almost consumed by Agent Smith, and the looming fear of Agent Smith in the real world.

We are at an interesting dilemma which hasn't been present in the previous iterations of the Matrix.

Neo is additionally trapped in between the Matrix and real world, presumably because the machines are upset he did not make the correct choice, denying his "program" exit to the real world.

This is displayed as a train track, where programs by the "Trainman" are smuggled into the Matrix. This leads our characters to an interesting battle back to a familiar face in order to free Neo.

As Neo is freed, he once again takes another trip to see The Oracle. The Oracle this time just has bleak news for Neo, explaining that "everything that has a beginning has an end".

She is of course referring to the pending destruction of Zion and collapse of the Matrix via Agent Smith. This would cause a full reload of the Matrix with a complete loss of life of the existing minds.

As we saw in the first movie though, humans are not born they are harvested from a field in large quantities. Perhaps the idea of million of batteries humans dying is not so bad after all, as the machines can easily replace them in time.

At this point in time though, the ship Neo has lived on for two movies is now destroyed. The "Nebuchadnezzar" as it was called was destroyed from a mine from a Sentinel instead of being ripped apart like how the Sentinels usually attack.

We can assume the machines are well aware of the defense mechanisms of these ships and therefore have changed tactics to an attack that cannot be blocked.

In the previous movie, we learn that Zion's counsel has dispatched two ships to provide backup to Neo. They understand that hundreds of thousands of Sentinels cannot be stopped so they begin to put faith in Neo and his idea.

Only one of the ships makes it to Neo, we learn the other ship fired an EMP which rendered it useless. We soon find out this was done by none other than Bane, who is Agent Smith.

With the crew of Neo without a ship they are rescued by another ship destined to return to Zion to join the fight against the machines. On their way back to Zion, they discover a ship out of commission by the hand of Bane and help to get it running again.

At this point with two ships operational, Neo asks for one of them to complete his task. One of the captains disagrees with the request intent on heading home, the other folds giving up her ship on the condition that she gets to drive the other.

Neo leaves with Trinity on a brand new ship, destined for the machine homeland - a place never visited by any character we know about. However, Bane Agent Smith was hiding on this ship and fights Neo intent on killing him.

Smith fries the eyes of Neo leaving us to believe that Neo will die unable to see. In a turn of events we learn that Neo in the real world can perceive machines as a golden light.

Much like he can affect machines he can use this gift to view machines, which by extension is Bane. After barely surviving this encounter, he and Trinity continue to head for the machine homeland.

Zion at this point has suffered its first breach to the walls. With hundreds of sentinels screaming through per second.

We watch Zion fight a losing battle, which we've learned has happened time and time again. They are just simply too many machines to kill. As Neo approaches the machine world, they discover a highly reinforced structure including machines much larger than the sentinels we've learned to hate.

Neo begins to use his gift over the machines and begins destroying them in mass. The machines quickly learn that Neo has some connection to the machines and seek to destroy it.

This maneuver benefits Neo more as he gets a small glimpse further into the machines. He learns the machines cannot travel to the sky, so he instructs Trinity to head for the sun.

For the first time in the series, we get to see the real world Sun and the characters love it. What goes up must come down though and the large barreling ship crashes into the machine structure.

Trinity dies from this crash and leaves a blind Neo to wander the machine halls. Zion at this point is almost destroyed with nearly a million sentinels flying around eliminating everything.

Thankfully, the ship carrying Morpheus has made it home and they fire off an EMP. This move only delays the inevitable as all defensive measures have been fried.

Our remaining humans alive in Zion retreat to the caves and await the final stand. Neo finally meets the machine leader, which is known as the Dues Ex Machina.

Seeing how the machines have probably predicted every outcome, it is in their best interest to listen to Neo.

Mouse chatters about the human need for sex and ponders the question of real taste in the simulated Matrix. Morpheus decides to take Neo to see the Oracle, and the crew knows the meeting will be meaningful.

Unseen, Cypher drops a cell phone in a trash can, allowing the Agents to discover their location. Neo watches his old city pass by in a new light.

The Oracle appears in the form of a black grandmother in a tenement house. Neo encounters a young monk, who teaches him to bend a spoon using only his mind.

She claims that Morpheus will willingly give his life for Neo. Morpheus and Neo leave the Oracle, but Agents ambush Mouse, who dies with his guns blazing.

Smith and Morpheus fight in a rusted-out bathroom. A host of officers eventually overpower Morpheus and capture him, despite his valiant efforts.

Cypher mysteriously splits from the rest of the group and returns first to the Nebuchadnezzar. There, he shoots Tank and Dozer and assumes control of the board.

Cypher believes he holds their lives in his hands. The miracle happens. Tank turns out not to be dead, but only grievously wounded.

He manages to kill Cypher, thus saving Neo and Trinity. Agent Smith, along with his subordinates, Brown and Jones, transports Morpheus to a secure skyscraper for interrogation, where he is hooked up to electrodes and given drugs.

Morpheus remains silent. Smith begins to explain the history of the Matrix. A previous version existed in which the machines created an entirely perfect world for humans, but the program failed.

Thus, the second, intentionally flawed Matrix was developed. Just as Tank solemnly prepares to kill their leader, Neo remembers something the Oracle said to him.

He begins to have faith in himself and believes he can save Morpheus. Although what he wants to attempt has no precedent, Neo believes he can do it.

He plans to enter the Matrix and rescue Morpheus. Trinity accompanies him. As Neo and Trinity outfit themselves with numerous firearms, Agent Smith describes his theory of humanity to Morpheus, who is beaten, bloody, and drugged.

Smith reasons that humans are not mammals but viruses, since they spread exponentially, using up every resource they have then moving on to devour the resources of another place.

When Morpheus refuses to break, Agent Smith asks the other two agents to leave him alone with Morpheus. Removing his glasses and disconnecting himself from his earpiece the earpiece that connects him to his machine superiors , Smith admits to Morpheus that he despises the Matrix.

Meanwhile, Tank places Neo and Trinity at the lobby of the skyscraper, and the pair proceed to shoot their way through it, killing a team of security guards in the process.

Agents Brown and Jones return, surprised and confused to see Smith without his earpiece. Just as the Agent stands over him, ready to finish him off, Trinity appears and shoots the Agent in the head.

Before the body falls, the Agent shifts back out of it, leaving only a human soldier dead on the roof. The Agent himself is gone. Tank downloads a B- helicopter flying program into Trinity, and she and Neo lower the helicopter right outside the room where Smith holds Morpheus.

Morpheus breaks his chains and runs toward the copter. He catches Morpheus as Trinity flies the copter away. Neo and Morpheus drop onto a roof.

The helicopter crashes spectacularly into a nearby building, with Trinity leaping out just in time, grabbing onto the rope bound around Neo. Neo lets himself be dragged to the edge of the building, stands upon the edge calmly, and reels Trinity to safety, after which Morpheus proclaims that Neo is the One.

Neo protests that the Oracle told him differently. Morpheus counters smoothly that the Oracle told him all he needed to know.

Tank finds an exit for the trio in an abandoned subway. Morpheus exits first. Trinity, worried, stops to confess something to Neo that the Oracle had told her.

Soon after, Smith shifts into the body of a homeless man in the corner. Smith shoots at her just as she exits.

He misses her but succeeds in slicing the phone line, which removes any possible exit for Neo. A final showdown between Neo and Smith begins.

Although everyone has told him to run when an Agent arrives, Neo, starting to believe in his own abilities, turns to face Smith. A colossal fight ensues with spectacular special effects, and Neo heroically bounces back many times from seemingly certain defeat.

Smith refers to Neo by his Matrix name, Mr. The subway appears to crush Smith, but even this collision proves insufficient to stop an Agent.

The subway screeches to a halt, and Smith emerges for more fighting, but Neo finally runs. Back at the Nebuchadnezzar , sentinels close in.

Multiple Agents chase Neo through crowded streets, shifting into any body that can get a good shot at him. Neo steals a cell phone, and Tank directs him through the streets and alleys back to the motel where we first saw Trinity.

The sentinels land on the ship and begin to slice it open, but Morpheus believes Neo can make it and holds off from discharging the EMP. Smith empties his gun into Neo, who falls to the ground, dead.

She kisses him. With this, Neo is resurrected. With his newfound realization and acceptance of his role, Neo rises and assumes even greater powers.

Through his point of view, we suddenly see that everything around him is covered with green computer code.

Neo is finally able to see the code that creates the Matrix. The agents are now powerless against him.

The other Agents run, Trinity screams at Neo on the ship as the sentinels pierce the deck, and Neo picks up the phone and exits the Matrix.

With Neo safely back on the ship, the crew discharges the EMP. The sentinels drop away. Neo and Trinity kiss. The Matrix ends with Neo talking to someone on a pay phone.

He flies straight up into the sky. Trinity flies through the night air on a motorcycle, crashes into a building, and kills a host of security guards.

Suddenly we see an image of her falling out of a skyscraper, shooting bullets upward at an Agent, who falls down with her. The Agent strikes Trinity with a bullet, something crashes hard into the ground below, and Neo wakes up from this nightmare, in bed next to Trinity.

She tries to calm him. The Nebuchadnezzar sits and waits, the crew members hoping the Oracle will summon them.

He, too, sits and waits. The captains of all the humans' ships, both the Nebuchadnezzar and others, meet inside the Matrix, in an underground bunker.

A quarter million sentinels are ready to attack the remnants of humanity once they reach the core. Commander Lock requests that all ships return to Zion and prepare to defend it.

Morpheus resists, wanting at least one ship to stay in case the Oracle calls. During this meeting, Neo senses something is amiss.

Neo orders the guards to leave, warning that Agents have arrived. Two identical Agent Smiths speak to each other, agreeing that things continue to go according to plan.

Having left another ship behind, the Nebuchadnezzar enters Zion dramatically. A vast cylindrical city burrowed deep into the earth, Zion maintains central axes for defense and has living quarters around its perimeter.

We discover that Niobe used to work with Morpheus until the Oracle made a certain prophecy and has since been loyal to Lock.

The Kid wants someday to become a crew member of the Nebuchadnezzar. Morpheus and Lock clash in their beliefs concerning the best way to defend Zion.

Lock advocates discretion in delivering information. Morpheus advocates telling the complete truth and hoping inspiration will deliver them from fear.

Link and the Kid leave Neo and Trinity alone in an elevator, where they begin to kiss. They look forward to a few hours alone together.

When the doors open, Neo finds that the sick and destitute of Zion have come to him for guidance and salvation, treating him as a Christ figure.

Trinity leaves Neo to do his work. Link returns to his wife, Zee. At a nighttime assembly in a great cave of Zion, Morpheus tells the people the truth about the impending attack from the machines but immediately inspires them with his fearlessness.

The Zionites celebrate with a sweaty, pulsing, underground rave. Simultaneously, Neo and Trinity consummate their relationship under an arch in private quarters away from the assembly.

As Neo and Trinity make love, Neo again has his nightmare vision of Trinity falling from the skyscraper and being pierced with a bullet. Finally, Zion sleeps.

Meanwhile, in the Matrix, two renegade hackers flee from Agents. One man makes his exit, but another, Bane, is intercepted by one of the two Agent Smiths.

Hamann, the aging Elder of Zion, also wandering, joins Neo for conversation. Hamann takes Neo down to the engineering level of the city, the part no one thinks about.

They converse about the symbiosis between man and machine, then discuss the nature of control. Hamann admits he has no idea how Neo does the things he does.

Neo is there. Finally, the Oracle has summoned him. The Nebuchadnezzar prepares to leave. As Link readies to once again risk his life, Zee offers him a good luck charm.

Neo understands. In the Matrix, Neo wends his way through a Chinatown and enters a door into a wood-and-paper templelike structure.

An angel named Seraph awaits him politely, then begins to fight him. Neo and Seraph fight throughout the temple, knocking over wooden bowls. Leading Neo down a white hallway full of doors, Seraph opens a door onto a city playground, where the Oracle sits on a bench.

Neo begins to realize that Seraph and the Oracle are not humans, but parts of the machine program that constitutes the Matrix, a fact that the Oracle confirms.

Wondering aloud how he can then trust her, she replies only that he has to choose for himself what to believe in. She explains the anomalous programs a bit more.

When a program faces deletion, it can either hide itself or return to the Source, the machine mainframe, where, she suggests, the path of the One ends.

The Source, the Oracle reveals, comprises only light. She affirms that Neo can now see outside of time. As their time together ends, she tells Neo he must see the Keymaker to gain access to the Source.

Agent Smith arrives as soon as the Oracle leaves, implying a connection between himself, Neo, and the Oracle. Smith and Neo discuss this idea explicitly.

However, both are still imprisoned and must play out their purpose, a purpose Neo has yet to discover. Smith tries to replicate himself inside Neo as he did with Bane, but Neo resists it, beginning a colossal street fight that pits Neo against Smith and dozens of replicated Smiths.

Smith has departed from the strictures of the program, but he is still a machine. Neo eventually escapes again. Back at Zion, Lock addresses the Council and emphasizes the seriousness of the machine threat, requesting them to hold all ships in port, as nothing has been heard from the Nebuchadnezzar.

The Council overrules him and asks for two volunteers to search for the Nebuchadnezzar. In an effort to find the Keymaker, Morpheus, Trinity, and Neo visit the Merovingian, a haughty Frenchman, at his upscale restaurant in the Matrix.

The Merovingian dines with his wife, Persephone. To demonstrate his power over the program, the Merovingian sends a coded slice of cake over to a gorgeous woman.

The cake slowly affects her erogenous zones, a subtle process that the Frenchman narrates in appreciative detail. He observes that we are all similarly out of control, slaves to causality.

He refuses to make a deal for the Keymaker. The Twins, a pair of white-suited, powder-skinned, dreadlocked enforcers, escort Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus to the elevator.

Unsure exactly what the Oracle intended to happen, the three ride the elevator. It opens onto a floor where they are surprised to be greeted by Persephone.

She escorts them into a fancy bathroom and rants against the Merovingian, whom she says used to be like Neo but has since changed.

Explaining that she can see true love written all over the stoic faces of Neo and Trinity, she requests that in exchange for the Keymaker, she wants to receive one kiss from Neo.

She orders Neo to kiss her just as he kisses Trinity so that she can experience real love again. Trinity draws her gun. Persephone insists, saying that if she lies to them, Trinity can kill her where she stands.

Neo kisses her chastely, then realizes the gravity of the situation. He removes his sunglasses and kisses Persephone passionately, with Trinity standing by.

As they leave, the Merovingian and his henchmen confront the group. Persephone accuses the Merovingian of cheating on her with the girl from the cake episode.

Though plainly guilty, he denies it. Seeing the Keymaker freed, the Merovingian orders an attack on all of them. The Twins disappear into the floor and come up on the other side of the room.

The Keymaker flees, and Morpheus and Trinity run to help him. Neo stays to handle the rest in the great hall. He stops all their bullets, as well as the thrusts of the swords they pull from the great staircase.

An extended battle and chase sequence ensues. The Twins, occasionally shifting into matterless ghosts, chase Morpheus and Trinity into a parking lot, where they battle.

Trinity gets into a car and drives it around, leading the chase onto city streets. Just as Neo defeats the henchmen in the great hall and aims to catch up with the others in the parking lot, the Twins close the door.

Careening onto city streets, the chase pits the Twins against Morpheus and Trinity, who attempt to protect the Keymaker.

During the chase, numerous cars crash, Agents shift into multiple drivers, and the Twins bleed into whatever car they want.

At one point, Trinity and Morpheus split up, and Trinity grabs the Keymaker, leaps off an overpass onto a trailer carrying motorcycles, and drives the Keymaker down the wrong side of a crowded highway.

Finally, Trinity escapes. Morpheus knocks an agent off an eighteen-wheeler and stands there helplessly with the Keymaker. An Agent drives the truck directly toward another eighteen-wheeler, also driven by an Agent.

The trucks smash into each other, erupting into balls of flame. In midair, Morpheus and the Keymaker are caught by Neo, who has flown in from the mountains.

Watching the Matrix at his board, Link cheers. In Zion, sentinels relentlessly grind away into the earth. To access it, the units have to work together and knock out power in a massive grid as well as disable the emergency power system.

They will then have only seconds to access the door. They strike at midnight, during a shift change of security guards.

Neo, worried about Trinity, asks her to stay behind. Reluctantly, she agrees. Therefore, the emergency power system remains engaged.

Otherwise they would miss their only chance. She has only five minutes. At the same time, the Keymaker leads Morpheus and Neo down a white hallway with countless doors.

As they turn the final corner, they meet Smith and hundreds of replicated Smiths. During the fight, Morpheus is nearly absorbed and replicated by the penetrating hand of Smith, but Neo saves him.

The Keymaker hides. Just as the system finally falls, the Keymaker sneaks out and opens the correct door. At the sound of the click, all the fighters stop and turn.

Neo grabs Morpheus and flies him through the crowd of Smiths, diving through the door just as the Keymaker closes it.

The Smiths empty their guns as the door shuts, striking the Keymaker. As he dies, he affirms that he has fulfilled his purpose and gives Neo the key to the correct door from around his neck.

Neo inserts it, and blinding light immediately surrounds him. Neo finds himself in an all-white room ringed by monitors. He meets the Architect, the creator of the Matrix.

His increased understanding spurred the creation of the second Matrix, in which a certain percentage of people did not believe.

The Architect allowed Zion to exist so the disbelievers could congregate there. Once the instability in the system could be contained, the rebels, conveniently assembled all in one place, could be periodically destroyed.

The Architect tells Neo that Neo represents the sixth cycle of these growths and extinctions. The idea is to manipulate his capacity for love and thereby cause him, effectively, to choose to eliminate all of humanity.

Walking through one door will lead to the death of Trinity but the salvation of humanity for yet another cycle. Zion will be rebuilt from scratch and, essentially, the program will repeat with its previously acceptable levels of instability.

Walking through the other door will give Neo the chance to save Trinity, but doing this will likely lead to the permanent elimination of all humanity.

The Oracle and her prophecies of the One, then, were also intentional inserts into the program, further systems of control to manipulate the One into following his predetermined path.

Neo now has the potential to stop the cycle of mass extinctions. Possessing no humanity themselves, the machines are unable to predict what will happen if Neo chooses the door allowing him to save Trinity, selecting love over saving the human race.

Cypher exits the Matrix first and murders several crew members as they lie defenseless in the real world. Before he can kill Neo, Cypher is killed by Tank, a crewman whom he only wounded.

In the Matrix, the Agents interrogate Morpheus to learn his access codes to the mainframe computer in Zion. Tank proposes killing Morpheus to prevent this, but Neo resolves to return to the Matrix to rescue Morpheus, as prophesied by the Oracle; Trinity insists she accompany him.

While rescuing Morpheus, Neo gains confidence in his abilities, performing feats comparable to the Agents'. Morpheus and Trinity exit the Matrix, but Smith ambushes and kills Neo before he can leave.

As a group of Sentinels attack the Nebuchadnezzar , Trinity whispers to Neo that he cannot be dead, because she loves him and the Oracle told her she would fall in love with the One.

She kisses Neo and he revives with newfound power to perceive and control the Matrix. He effortlessly defeats Smith, and leaves the Matrix just in time for the ship's electromagnetic pulse to disable the Sentinels.

Later, Neo makes a telephone call inside the Matrix, promising the machines that he will show their prisoners "a world where anything is possible".

He hangs up and flies into the sky. In , the Wachowskis presented the script for the film Assassins to Warner Bros. After Lorenzo di Bonaventura , the president of production of the company at the time, read the script, he decided to buy rights to it and included two more pictures, Bound and The Matrix , in the contract.

The first movie the Wachowskis directed, Bound , then became a critical success. Using this momentum, they later asked to direct The Matrix.

In the Wachowskis pitched the role of Neo to Will Smith. Smith explained on his YouTube channel that the idea was for him to be Neo, while Morpheus was to be played by Val Kilmer.

He later explained that he did not quite understand the concept and he turned down the role to instead film Wild Wild West.

Producer Joel Silver soon joined the project. Although the project had key supporters, including Silver and Di Bonaventura, to influence the company, The Matrix was still a huge investment for Warner Bros.

The cast were required to be able to understand and explain The Matrix. The directors had long been admirers of Hong Kong action cinema , so they decided to hire the Chinese martial arts choreographer and film director Yuen Woo-ping to work on fight scenes.

To prepare for the wire fu , the actors had to train hard for several months. Yuen was optimistic but then began to worry when he realized how unfit the actors were.

Yuen let their body style develop and then worked with each actor's strength. He built on Reeves's diligence, Fishburne's resilience, Weaving's precision, and Moss's feminine grace.

Reeves trained hard and even requested training on days off. However, the surgery still made him unable to kick for two out of four months of training.

As a result, Reeves did not kick much in the film. In the film, the code that composes the Matrix itself is frequently represented as downward-flowing green characters.

This code uses a custom typeface designed by Simon Whiteley, [31] which includes mirror images of half-width kana characters and Western Latin letters and Arabic numerals.

The code received the Runner-up Award in the Jesse Garson Award for In-film typography or opening credit sequence.

The Matrix ' s production designer , Owen Paterson , used methods to distinguish the "real world" and the Matrix in a pervasive way.

The production design team generally placed a bias towards the Matrix code's distinctive green color in scenes set within the simulation, whereas there is an emphasis on the color blue during scenes set in the "real world".

In addition, the Matrix scenes' sets were slightly more decayed, monolithic, and grid-like, to convey the cold, logical and artificial nature of that environment.

For the "real world", the actors' hair was less styled, their clothing had more textile content, and the cinematographers used longer lenses to soften the backgrounds and emphasize the actors.

The Nebuchadnezzar was designed to have a patched-up look, instead of clean, cold and sterile space ship interior sets as used on productions such as Star Trek.

The wires were made visible to show the ship's working internals, and each composition was carefully designed to convey the ship as "a marriage between Man and Machine".

During the testing of a breathing mechanism in the pod, the tester suffered hypothermia in under eight minutes, so the pod had to be heated.

Kym Barrett , costume designer, said that she defined the characters and their environment by their costume. The actors needed to perform martial art actions in their costume, hang upside-down without people seeing up their clothing, and be able to work the wires while strapped into the harnesses.

The sunglasses, a staple of the film's aesthetics, were commissioned for the film by designer Richard Walker from sunglasses maker Blinde Design.

All but a few scenes were filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney, and in the city itself, although recognizable landmarks were not included in order to maintain the impression of a generic American city.

The filming helped establish New South Wales as a major film production center. Due to Reeves's neck injury, some of the action scenes had to be rescheduled to wait for his full recovery.

As a result, the filming began with scenes that did not require much physical exertion, [42] such as the scene in Thomas Anderson's office, the interrogation room, [27] or the car ride in which Neo is taken to see the Oracle.

The bullet-time fight scene was filmed on the roof of Symantec Corporation building in Kent Street, opposite Sussex Street. Moss performed the shots featuring Trinity at the beginning of the film and all the wire stunts herself.

She stated that she was under a lot of pressure at the time and was devastated when she realized that she would be unable to do it.

The dojo set was built well before the actual filming. During the filming of these action sequences, there was significant physical contact between the actors, earning them bruises.

Reeves's injury and his insufficient training with wires prior to filming meant he was unable to perform the triple kicks satisfactorily and became frustrated with himself, causing the scene to be postponed.

The scene was shot successfully a few days later, with Reeves using only three takes. Yuen altered the choreography and made the actors pull their punches in the last sequence of the scene, creating a training feel.

The filmmakers originally planned to shoot the subway scene in an actual subway station , but the complexity of the fight and related wire work required shooting the scene on a set.

The set was built around an existing train storage facility, which had real train tracks. Filming the scene when Neo slammed Smith into the ceiling, Chad Stahelski , Reeves's stunt double, sustained several injuries, including broken ribs , knees, and a dislocated shoulder.

Another stuntman was injured by a hydraulic puller during a shot in which Neo was slammed into a booth. The helicopter was a full-scale light-weight mock-up suspended by a wire rope operated a tilting mechanism mounted to the studio roofbeams.

The helicopter had a real minigun side-mounted to it, which was set to cycle at half its regular rounds per min firing rate. To prepare for the scene in which Neo wakes up in a pod, Reeves lost 15 pounds and shaved his whole body to give Neo an emaciated look.

The scene in which Neo fell into the sewer system concluded the principal photography. As for artistic inspiration for bullet time, I would credit Otomo Katsuhiro , who co-wrote and directed Akira , which definitely blew me away, along with director Michel Gondry.

His music videos experimented with a different type of technique called view-morphing and it was just part of the beginning of uncovering the creative approaches toward using still cameras for special effects.

Our technique was significantly different because we built it to move around objects that were themselves in motion, and we were also able to create slow-motion events that 'virtual cameras' could move around — rather than the static action in Gondry's music videos with limited camera moves.

The film is known for popularizing a visual effect [55] known as " bullet time ", which allows a shot to progress in slow-motion while the camera appears to move through the scene at normal speed.

When John Gaeta read the script, he pleaded with an effects producer at Mass. Illusion to let him work on the project, and created a prototype that led to him becoming the film's visual effects supervisor.

The method used for creating these effects involved a technically expanded version of an old art photography technique known as time-slice photography, in which an array of cameras are placed around an object and triggered simultaneously.

Each camera captures a still picture, contributing one frame to the video sequence, which creates the effect of "virtual camera movement"; the illusion of a viewpoint moving around an object that appears frozen in time.

The bullet time effect is similar but slightly more complicated, incorporating temporal motion so that rather than appearing totally frozen, the scene progresses in slow and variable motion.

Instead of firing the cameras simultaneously, the visual effect team fired the cameras fractions of a second after each other, so that each camera could capture the action as it progressed, creating a super slow-motion effect.

Because the cameras circle the subject almost completely in most of the sequences, computer technology was used to edit out the cameras that appeared in the background on the other side.

The photo-realistic surroundings generated by this method were incorporated into the bullet time scene, [59] and algorithms based on optical flow were used to interpolate between the still images to produce a fluent dynamic motion; [60] [61] the computer-generated "lead in" and "lead out" slides were filled in between frames in sequence to get an illusion of orbiting the scene.

Manex also handled creature effects, such as Sentinels and machines in real world scenes; Animal Logic created the code hallway and the exploding Agent at the end of the film.

DFilm managed scenes that required heavy use of digital compositing, such as Neo's jump off a skyscraper and the helicopter crash into a building.

The ripple effect in the latter scene was created digitally, but the shot also included practical elements, and months of extensive research were needed to find the correct kind of glass and explosives to use.

The scene was shot by colliding a quarter-scale helicopter mock-up into a glass wall wired to concentric rings of explosives; the explosives were then triggered in sequence from the center outward, to create a wave of exploding glass.

The photogrammetric and image-based computer-generated background approaches in The Matrix ' s bullet time evolved into innovations unveiled in the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

The method of using real photographs of buildings as texture for 3D models eventually led the visual effect team to digitize all data, such as scenes, characters' motions and expressions.

It also led to the development of "Universal Capture", a process which samples and stores facial details and expressions at high resolution.

With these highly detailed collected data, the team were able to create virtual cinematography in which characters, locations, and events can all be created digitally and viewed through virtual cameras, eliminating the restrictions of real cameras.

Dane A. Davis was responsible for creating the sound effects for the film. The fight scene sound effects, such as the whipping sounds of punches, were created using thin metal rods and recording them, then editing the sounds.

The sound of the pod containing a human body closing required almost fifty sounds put together.

The film's score was composed by Don Davis. Davis focused on this theme of reflections when creating his score, alternating between sections of the orchestra and attempting to incorporate contrapuntal ideas.

Davis' score combines orchestral, choral and synthesizer elements; the balance between these elements varies depending on whether humans or machines are the dominant subject of a given scene.

Worldwide, it was the fourth highest-grossing film of the year. The Matrix was praised by many critics, as well as filmmakers, and authors of science fiction, [9] especially for its "spectacular action" scenes and its "groundbreaking special effects".

The Wachowskis have little feeling for character or human interaction, but their passion for movies —for making them, watching them, inhabiting their world—is pure and deep.

According to William Irwin this is Kantian, because the machines wished to impose a perfect world on humans in an attempt to keep people content, so that they would remain completely submissive to the machines, both consciously and subconsciously, but humans were not easy to make content.

Andrew Godoski sees allusions to Christ , including Neo's " virgin birth ", his doubt in himself, the prophecy of his coming, along with many other Christian references.

Matrixism is a fan-based religion created as "the matrix religion. Years after the release of The Matrix , both the Wachowskis came out as transgender women, and some have seen transgender themes in the film.
